- Hi, everyone talks about 28.8 only being possible under
- perfect conditions. I seem to recall similar discussions a while
- ago concerning 9600. .. So what is realistic?
-
- I recently moved to LA, got residental phone service and
- siogned up with a local service provider. I then replaced my 14.4
- (that seemed to be running a bit slow out here, but i never
- investigated) with a sportster 28.8. After I took a closer look at
- what was going on it was clear, that i was no where near 28.8. Running
- ppp (which i'm quite certain is set up ok) i get transfer rates of 300
- to 700 bytes/sec (I've seen 800 on a few occasions, but never more).
-
- Using the &u and the &n at commands i can force the modem to
- connect at 28.8 or whatever I want, though left up to itself it sways
- between 28.8 (once I got 33.6 - i did not think my modem was supposed
- to suport that - but that`s another issue) and 4800. I am assuming the
- modem is dropping to 9600 or even 4800 after it connects. The link
- diagnostics tell me of Nacks in the teens for an hour long connection
- and blers (block error rate? what is that on a modem?) between 200 and
- 400. How do i tell what the modem dropped to during a connection?
- Hangups do occur although rare enough not to bother me to much.
-
- I know so far from Pac-Bell that I am on some "older AT&T
- equipment" and my isp is using digital equipment and that the
- combination "can cause calls to take a bit longer to go through, but
- should not effect line quality". Sometimes calls take so long to go
- through i get the "if you would like to make a call, please hang up
- and. .." over really bad static. I have not really noticed any static
- during voice conversations though. Taking a look into my wall revealed
- many rather old looking solid strand wires. My line does not terminate
- in my jack either, instead my jack is spliced into it in parallel. I
- tried disconnecting my line from whatever it continues on to whith no
- improvement or negative effect. I assume that the other lines are
- going to other appartments, and do not really want to touch them. I
- have not had any sort of crosstalk on voice connections.
-
- Since the telco box for my building is in a locked room, and
- apperently around here the landlord is responcible for upkeep of the
- first phone jack, I am about ready to ask the telco people to check it
- out. Is this worth my while? Or are they just going to pick up the
- phone hear a dialtone, call their office and pronounce that it works?
- Has anyone had any experience with this area (818 area code 887
- prefix)?
-
- I greatly appreciate any sort of help anyone can offer me in
- debugging this problem. I normally try not to go begging for help, but
- this is going beyond my competence.
-
- thanks
